Aficionados, journalists, experts and business people linked to the realm of tobacco agreed to say this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Most of them never believed there could be such a wonderful world concealed behind a Cuban cigar. The H. Its cigar rollers will be tasked this year with the making of the Montecristo 80 Aniversario commemorative vitola, selected to mark birth of this brand back in 1935. For its part, La Corona, on 20 de Mayo Avenue on the corner of Línea del Ferrocarril, stands as the main house of the Romeo y Julieta, Hoyo de Monterrey and San Cristóbal de La Habana brands. From here they reach out to countless markets around the globe, including the Romeo y Julieta Gran Reserva, hand-rolled cigars that have been aged for five to eight years. In this factory, some 625 employees –a majority of them with vast experience in this trade- churn out over 30,000 cigars on a daily basis. Quality controllers, hand rollers, labelers, ringers, readers, that is, men and women linked to habanos, answered pleasantly all the questions asked by guests, who eventually left fully pleased for having learned a little bit more about the world’s best tobacco.

Wide of Castro and Chavez seated and talking STORYLINE Passion comes in many forms, and for hundreds visiting Cuba this month, it's brown, rolled and good with brandy. Cigar fanatics, deterred by neither money nor distance, travel across the world and pay thousands of US dollars to experience the world's finest cigars. Each year elaborate humidors, or cigar cabinets, are auctioned off for good causes and on Saturday one man paid a record 356-thousand US dollars for an unsigned humidor. Normally a small number of finely crafted humidors are signed by the Cuban leader Fidel Castro, but due to his poor health this was the first year he has been unable to do so. Castro has not attended a cigar festival in four years, but has never failed to send the autographed humidors for the auction night. Those making the pilgrimage to Cuba for the annual Havana cigar festival say the smokes bring them pleasure, peace and, often, big bucks. Participants at the festival visit cigar factories and plantations and network with distributors at trade fairs and seminars. Oscar Basulto, Co-President Habanos SA said the expo had met all of the expectations, but promised bigger and better things for next year's festival. All around the expo people could be seen enjoying a cigar or two including the ailing leader's sons Alex Castro and Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart. Royalty, celebrities and Castro, who quit smoking cigars over ten years ago have previously attended the extravagant dinner. Cigars are one of Cuba's most important exports, worth about 340 million (m) US dollars annually. Spain is Cuba's top customer. Europe in general buys up 66 per cent of the island's cigar exports, followed by countries in the Americas, not including the United States, and the Middle East, according to Habanos S.A., Cuba's cigar marketing firm. Trade restrictions against communist Cuba prevent the island's cigars from entering the US market.
